On January 12, 2015 a highly respected Khmer Krom Buddhist monk, Venerable Thach Khan, was fatally stabbed to death by a teenage fellow monk in the Phnom Penh, Cambodia area. On January 17th there was a ceremonial funeral procession held in Siem Reap in a show of support and respect for the fallen monk. I was in the center of town in Siem Reap on the 17th and I took this photo as the procession passed through. It has been said that the young monk had been spending time in coffee shops and had a girlfriend. The older monk was in the process of chastising the younger monk for his violation of their creed when the confrontation took place. It has also been alleged that the investigation was faulty, that there was more than one person involved in the killing, and that politics was somehow involved. In any case the young monk was not charged with murder but rather was given a five year prison sentence for intentional violence with aggravating circumstances.
“I do not take photographs only for myself but so that they express some social meaning in relation to the time in which I live.” (Jorge Rueda)
